Thailand is known for its rich culture, hospitality, and respect for tradition. Understanding Thai etiquette is essential for visitors—it shows politeness and helps build positive relationships with locals. Below are the key rules of what you should and shouldn’t do in Thailand.

What You Should Do (Dos)

1. Respect the Royal Family
The King and royal family are deeply revered. You should stand during the royal anthem (such as in cinemas). Speaking negatively about them is a criminal offense.

2. Greet with a “wai”
Pressing your palms together at chest level with a slight bow is a traditional Thai greeting. It’s especially appropriate when greeting elders or respected people.

3. Take off your shoes before entering homes or temples
Removing shoes is a sign of respect. It’s common in homes, temples, some shops, and salons.

4. Dress modestly at religious sites
When visiting temples, cover your shoulders and knees—this applies to both men and women.

5. Be polite and smile
Thai people value calmness, politeness, and a friendly attitude. A smile goes a long way.

What You Shouldn’t Do (Don’ts)

1. Do not touch anyone’s head
The head is considered the most sacred part of the body. Even patting a child’s head is best avoided.

2. Do not point your feet at people or Buddha images
Feet are seen as the lowest part of the body. Avoid sitting with your legs extended toward others or religious objects.

3. Do not raise your voice or show anger
Losing your temper is seen as a loss of dignity and is frowned upon. Stay calm and respectful.

4. Do not touch monks (especially if you’re a woman)
Women must not touch monks or hand them items directly. Instead, place the item nearby so the monk can pick it up.

5. Do not behave in a provocative way in public
Public displays of affection like kissing or hugging are inappropriate. Avoid excessive emotional behavior in public places.

Following Thai etiquette shows respect for the local culture, helps avoid awkward situations, and creates a more pleasant and respectful travel experience.
